June 5-6, 2010 - Samantha Riggs & Boom Boom Bollywood! Saturday, June 5, workshops in Bollywood and Bhangra!
10am-12pm June 5th "Bollywood Groove & Precision: Shava Shava" This class will cover the rockin' and expressive choreography of "Shava Shava" from the blockbuster Hindi ("Bollywood") film Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham. Many of the dance moves in this number are derived from the Northern Indian dance form, Bhangra – a sure route to a workout! Samantha will also be incorporating her signature Bollywood tribal style combos – made popular by Boom Boom Bollywood – which can be adapted for use in any choreography or tribal dance form. It is suitable for men and women of all dance levels. Women should be sure and wear a support or sports bra. If you wear a skirt, be sure to wear something under it as we will be jumping and spinning! June 5th 2-4pm "Chakra Balancing through Dance" Interested in keeping your energy in alignment through bellydance and Bollywood dance moves? This is the workshop for you! We will learn warm up exercises to get the chakras moving and then progress to dance combinations geared to each of the seven chakras. This class will utilize movement from bellydance and East Indian dance, including body isolations, floorwork, spins and hand positions (mudras). If you need pads for floorwork or knee/ankle support to do deep knee bends, please bring it (alternate moves will be available for those with knee and/or ankle issues). Please dress as you would for a yoga or workout class… long skirts and coin belts will just get in your way. Sunday June 6th, 11am-1pm: COMPETITION BHANGRA! Bhangra is a folk dance style from the region of Punjab in Northern India. There are many Bhangra competitions around the country in which teams participate for prize money. In the quest for the prize, the traditional Bhangra moves have been spiced up by the competing teams… much as the bellydance community has elaborated on traditional Middle Eastern dances. The result is an athletic and exuberant version of traditional Bhangra… which is already quite aerobic in itself! Samantha has studied this over-the-top style with Punjabi instructors and will break it down for you. Be ready for jumps, stomps, drops and fun with rocking Bhangra remixes! This class is suitable for both men and women at a beginning or intermediate level in Bhangra. Women should be sure and wear a sports or support bra. Pants are recommended – students will only get frustrated wearing a skirt. If you need knee or ankle support to do deep knee bends, please bring it (alternate moves will be available for those with knee issues). This class is quite a workout, but fear not! You're up to it – just challenge yourself ) Level: All (athletic).
